Food waste is a very concerning matter, many theories and practices were offered to reduce food waste and to make a better consumption.
Entities and countries work hard for food sustainability and food waste elimination is on the top of the list for things to be solved.
But most of the researches do cover the topic of food waste elimination on very big scale, like to how to eliminate food waste in restaurants, hotels and other hospitality entities.
While operators in such entities are very good at controlling the consumption of food in way that make food waste is very unlikely, they might face a problem of food waste at their own households, regular persons whom do not work in hospitality, simply such people are trained on how to lower cost and food waste in a bigger scale operations from purchasing, storing, cooking to serving the right portion, and so when it comes to a regular household almost everyone starts to face a problem.
So we will try to simplify the researches and studies that are being taught to chefs and hospitality operators in order for everyone to try to implement them in their own households, and in order to do so we will give each and everyone of you a golden rule to be followed, and it’s to plan each and every detail when it comes to food.
How are you going to plan it? Well first thing first you have to put a meal plan, what are you going to eat for the upcoming week for example.
When you do that, do not just come up with items to be eaten, it got to be done in a pattern in which the different items share similar ingredients.
So as an example lets plan our dinner meals for a week, we will break down the meals into ingredients, we will eat pasta for 3 days, rice for another 3 and the last day will be left either for leftovers.
The protein will be meat, chicken and seafood, 2 days meat, 2 days chicken and the other two days seafood in case there are no leftovers available.
Now lets narrow the items more and dig in deep, we should know which type of meat to buy, which cut we will choose in order to assemble different items.
Another example let’s say we will eat seafood pasta for dinner tomorrow, so we will be needing shrimp, the day after we will be eating sweet and sour shrimp with steamed rice.
This way will help us in reducing the food waste, when we it is being conducted ahead.
Another important thing to be planned is the food storage, in other words how are you going to keep the raw materials you are going to cook, and how are you going to store the leftovers in order to re-use them again.
And in order to do that you have to make sure that the food you are going to store is being safely stored, specially cooked food, or else it is going to be wasted, or no longer suitable to be eaten.
You have to understand which type of food to be stored in a freezer, what could be stored in refrigerator and what could be left in your kitchen cabinet.
And to make it easier for you, you have to keep every frozen thing you already bought in a freezer, the same goes for refrigerator stuff.
When it comes to raw protein as fish, meat and poultry it should be either kept in a refrigerator or a freezer and this depends on when are you going to cook them.
So for example if you are going to cook the chicken you bought tomorrow then it’s better to be kept in the refrigerator, if it will take you 2 or more days then you have to put it in the freezer.
And keep stored things hygienic you have to know at which temperature it should be stored. when it comes to refrigerator, it is better for the interior to not exceed 4 degrees Celsius for food safety reasons.
While you are doing groceries you should keep an eye on places where you can buy larger volume of long shelf life items, at a lower price, in order for these items to be stored in your kitchen cabinet, for a duration that doesn’t exceed 3 months, and always use the FIFO technique while consuming them, FIFO stands for first in first out.
So simply to lower the food waste at your household you have to smartly plan your meals, and purchasing, and with practice you will be able to know exactly what to buy and in what quantity.
