HACCP or ISO 22000

A lot of people do not understand what are the differences between the HACCP and the ISO 22000, and do not know what certificates to go after and for what.


First HACCP stands for Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point System, and it’s a food safety system that prevents food safety from being compromised. ISO 22000 is an international standard according to ISO standards and has been created to guarantee the safety of the global food chain. In the few paragraphs below we will explain the difference between HACCP and ISO 22000 for the food industry.


If you are a company operating in the food industry, you are required by law to comply with established hygiene regulations in accordance with HACCP guidelines. It is a globally accepted standard which forms the basis for an internationally valid ISO food safety certificate and which is aimed at the entire agri-food chain. ISO 22000 applies to primary production companies, to retailers and to supply companies operating in the packaging and detergent industry, amongst others.


So what is The difference between HACCP and ISO 22000?

Whereas HACCP focuses purely on food safety, ISO goes further. ISO also looks at business processes and structures. ISO certification is independent, which means that an organization can decide for itself whether it wants to embrace it or not.

In conclusion, it can be said that obtaining an HACCP certificate is a legal obligation in order to be able to guarantee food safety for consumers, Achieving ISO 22000 is not mandatory, but it is a worldwide standard from which a great deal of status and reliability can be derived. ISO 22000 is based on the HACCP guidelines.


And what we just explained is for companies, but also food safety certificates can be obtained by individuals, whom after are called a food safety inspectors and then become auditors, and in this case the individual must go through a study period and exams to obtain His/Her degree.


In Egypt you can attend different courses, workshops or even a college program to enhance your education in a filed sch as the food safety, for example the American university in Cairo, does provide a food safety and quality management program that consists of 5 main courses

If not very much interested in attending a whole program, it’s always a good idea to attend workshops and classes that are provided by the cooking school for example, as in a direct or an indirect way you will be taught about food safety and hygiene as per the high measurements we as an entity do follow up with, and the professional chefs that are aware of all the food safety regulations.


This of course if you are just interested in the knowledge itself, and not planning on proceeding in a career as a food safety inspector or auditor.
